Sturnus et Cuculus (Gildersleeve)

SOURCE: A Latin Reader by Basil Lanneau Gildersleeve. This fable does not have a Perry number; does anybody know another source for this fable? It shows up in various 19th-century textbooks, but I don't know the story from elsewhere.

MACRONS. Here is the text with macrons:

Ad sturnum, quī ex urbe aufūgerat, volāvit cucūlus; scīre enim volēbat, quid hominēs de cantū suō iūdicārent. Quōmodo, interrogāvit, hominēs dē lusciniā loquuntur? Ille respondet: Lusciniae cantum maximopere laudant. - Quōmodo dē alaudā? - Multī quidem hūius cantum laudant. - Quōmodo dē coturnīce? - Nonnullī etiam coturnīcis cantū dēlectantur. - Quid vērō dē mē iūdicant? - Hōc, inquit sturnus, dīcere tibi nōn possum; nusquam enim tuī fit mentiō. Id nōn exspectāverat cucūlus. Sī ita est, inquit īrātus, in posterum semper dē mē ipse loquar.


ACCENT MARKS. Here is the text with ecclesiastical accents, plus some color-coding for the words of three or more syllables (blue: penultimate stress; red: antepenultimate stress):
